On this historic occasion of Democracy Day, the Southern Women Empowerment Forum (SWEF) joins millions of Nigerians to commemorate the struggles, sacrifices, and victories that define our democratic journey. June 12 stands as a bold reminder of the collective will of the Nigerian people and a testament to our enduring quest for justice, equity, and inclusive governance.
We celebrate not just a date, but the spirit of Nigerians who stood and continue to stand for truth, transparency, and people-centered leadership. Democracy is not merely a system of governance; it is a reflection of our voice, our rights, and our aspirations.
As a forum committed to empowering women and promoting sustainable development across Southern Nigeria and beyond, we use this moment to reflect on the gains made and the road ahead. We commend the contributions of women in political leadership, public service, civil society, and grassroots mobilization. Yet, we must acknowledge that more needs to be done to ensure that democracy truly delivers for all Nigerians regardless of gender, class, or background.
We urge governments at all levels to create more enabling environments for women’s political participation, economic inclusion, and access to education and healthcare. A thriving democracy must embrace diversity, encourage dialogue, and foster development that leaves no one behind.
Let us rekindle the hope that birthed June 12. Let us rise above our differences and work together in unity and with purpose to build a better Nigeria.
Happy Democracy Day!
Signed,
Hon. Dr. Helen Taiwo Adebakin
