MURIC Raises Concern Over Health of Detained El- Rufai, Demands Treatment

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has demanded immediate medical attention for the former governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, urging the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to give El-Rufai access to medical treatment.

The Executive Director of the organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola,in a statement argued that the denial of access to medical care to a detainee is a gross violation of Section 34(1)(a)(b)&(c) and Section 33(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which stipulates, ‘Every individual is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person, and accordingly…(b) no person shall be held in slavery or servitude’

According to the statement ” The media aide to Nasir El-rufai, Muyiwa Adekeye had raised alarm over Nasir El-rufai’s deteriorating health condition while in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

“According to him, El-rufai’s eye condition is worsening. His eyes were swollen, reddish, and itchy. He also alleged that the anti-corruption agency has denied him access to medical treatment

‎‎”MURIC is severely disturbed by this report. While we believe that the law must take it’s due course, we expect ICPC to toe the line of best global practices.‎

“We remind ICPC that denial of access to medical care to a detainee is a gross violation of Section 34(1)(a)(b)&(c) and Section 33(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which stipulates, ‘Every individual is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person, and accordingly…(b) no person shall be held in slavery or servitude’*

“The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Article 4, Clause 1 & 2 also says, ‘Human beings are inviolable. Every human being shall be entitled to respect for his life and the integrity of his person.’

*‎”We therefore demand immediate medical attention for the former governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. We frown upon any form of violation of his Allah-given fundamental human rights while in ICPC’s custody or elsewhere.”
