Motorists, drivers and commuters in Ekiti State have been advised to prioritize their health and safety on the highways, as the Federal Road Safety Corps says most crashes are preventable.
The warning came from the Sector Commander, RS8.2 Ekiti Sector Command, Corps Commander Sanya Adeoye, FCIPurS, MCILT, during a free medical outreach organized for drivers, passengers and members of the host community at the Central Motor Park, Ado-Ekiti.
The outreach was held as part of activities marking the 2026 Global Customer Service Week themed “THE EXTRA MILE” and was organized in partnership with Afe Babalola Multi-System Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).
According to Adeoye, the Command decided to go the extra mile beyond enforcement by checking the health status of drivers, noting that underlying health challenges such as poor vision, high blood pressure and high blood sugar are major contributors to road crashes.
According to the Command, the medical outreach featured blood sugar tests, eye screening, blood pressure checks, free medicated glasses courtesy of the Afe Babalola Multi-System Hospital team, free medical consultations and health advisory services.
“Only the living celebrates,” he said, urging road users to take responsibility for their safety, especially as the Ember Months set in.”
Corps Commander Adeoye added that as part of strategies to ensure a crash-free period, the Command will embark on aggressive public enlightenment campaigns across the three senatorial districts of the state.
The campaigns will include motorized rallies, road shows, advocacy visits, and radio and television interactive programmes to educate the motoring public during the Ember Months and beyond.
Beneficiaries, including drivers and passengers, commended the FRSC and its partners for the timely and life-saving gesture.
