Former special to the President on political matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu has said that the legal icon and founder ,Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti(ABUAD) Aare Afe Babalola deserves a place in the Gunnness Book of Records .
Ojudu, while acknowledging and appreciating the profound impacts of the elderstatesman to humanity said Afe Babalola’s life is full of great accomplishments.
“As of now, there is no record in the Guinness World Records for an individual who has set up a university at the age of 80 and within 16 years transformed it into a reference point for private universities.”
“And at 96, this extraordinary man still goes to work on a daily basis to assist in the management of the university, the expansive farm, and the industrial park and incubator. While he no longer goes to court, he continues to attend to his 60-year-old law chambers. What’s truly remarkable is that he never had any formal schooling beyond elementary school. Through self-tutoring, he obtained a degree in economics as well as a law degree. Without a doubt, he deserves one of the national honors and a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.”
“It is indeed surprising that Afe Babalola began the journey to set up a university at 80, and yet he accomplished it. How? When he was 80, he made the decision to sell all his property and acquisitions in Lagos, Abuja, the United Kingdom, Ibadan, etc. He then returned to his place of birth, Ado Ekiti, acquired an expanse of land, and began building the university to the admirable level it is today. In addition, he has also built a substantial teaching hospital equipped with rare and state-of-the-art equipment, where today intractable medical conditions are referred to from across the country.
“The university produces its own water, bread, fish, fruits, poultry, and also supplies fresh produce to the town that hosts it. Furthermore, it generates its power using gas and solar systems, completely independent of the national grid. The university has become a huge self-sustaining community, setting an inspiring example of sustainability and achievement.”
