The first Lady of Ekiti State Dr Olayemi Oyebanji has charged mothers to embrace exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months.
The governor’s wife gave this admonition while flagging off Ekiti State’s 2026 World Breastfeeding Week.
She explained that Ekiti joins the global call to promote, protect and support breastfeeding.
This year’s theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” reminds us that although breastfeeding is natural, it thrives only with the right support. Every mother deserves accurate information, quality healthcare, family encouragement and an enabling environment to breastfeed confidently.
As Nutrition Champion of Ekiti State, I am committed to ensuring no mother lacks the support she needs. This is a shared responsibility: fathers, families, healthcare workers, community leaders, employers and government all have roles to play in creating breastfeeding-friendly homes and workplaces.
“I charged our dear mothers to embrace exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. Breast milk provides vital nutrients and immune protection, supports healthy growth and brain development, and deepens the special bond between mother and child. Please avoid giving herbal preparations or other unapproved substances; let us rely on evidence-based healthcare for our babies.
“I was delighted to present gifts to nursing mothers as a token of appreciation for the priceless work they do. Let us continue to strengthen what works, support our mothers and invest in our children, because every child deserves a healthy, sustainable start in life.
“Together, we can build a healthier Ekiti; one mother, one baby, one family at a time”.The First Lady said .
