There may not be an end in sight in the crisis rocking the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) as the presidential candidate of the party Alhaji Abubakar Atiku foreclosed the removal of the National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu as precondition for truce .
Some aggrieved interest in the party led by the Rivers State ,Nyesome Wike had protested the alleged lopsidedness of the major party positions which they claimed skewed in favour of a particular region(North )
There have been arguments back and front as to the appropriateness or otherwise of the candudacy of the current chairman of the party who they argued hailed from same region as the party’s Flagbearer.
Atiku while addressing members of the PDP in SouthWest at a stakeholders meeting at his instance said the only way the national chairman of the party, can be removed is only for the party’s constitution to be amended.
The former Vice President gave the clarifications after the SouthWest leadership and stakeholders unanimously agreed at the interactive sessionthat only panacea for peace to rein is for Ayu to resign or be removed.
The presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar said for this to be achieved, the party constitution must be looked into, and if necessary to be amended, it will be amended to meet the demand.
The Oyo State governor , Engineer Seyi Makinde who spoke on behalf of the SouthWest caucus noted that the PDP must restructure itself before it will restructure Nigeria.
He noted that one of the conditions to restructure the party is for Ayu to resign.
Makinde explained that the presidential candidate, Atiku is from the north while Ayu is also from the north.
He noted that one of the conditions to balance the equation is to chose the national chairman from the South since the presidential candidate is from the North.
“We must speak the truth. The truth is that we don’t have any issue either with the party or the candidate.
“We don’t have any issue in PDP. This is not about individual. Those are the issues that are behind us, it has happened, it has happened.
“The issue is that we must restructure Nigeria if we want unity in Nigeria. But, we must restructure PDP itself before we restructure Nigeria.
“If we want to restructure Nigeria, do we have the capacity, the answer is yes.
“But, the South West PDP is asking the PDP chairman to resign. The south west PDP is telling the Chairman to step down”.
