President Donald Trump has said that the United States sent weapons to anti-government protesters in Iran through Kurdish groups, during the nationwide protest that lasted for days in January 2026.
Speaking in a telephone interview with Fox News on Sunday, Trump said the weapons did not reach the protesters.
“We sent them a lot of guns. We sent them through the Kurds. And I think the Kurds kept them,” Trump said.
“We sent guns to the protesters, a lot of them. And I think the Kurds took the guns,” he added.
Trump was referring to the Kurdish population, which lives across Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria. Several Kurdish militant groups operating in Iran have been designated as terrorist organisations by the Iranian government.
Trump’s comments came as he also warned Iran against escalating attacks and called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell.” He also said Monday would be “Bridge Day.”
