I am honoured to have participated in the ‘Leadership in Crises’ executive education programme at the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. This intensive five-day course, led by renowned faculty chairs Herman B. (Dutch) Leonard and Arnold Howitt, provided insights into crisis management, leadership resilience, and strategic decision-making during emergencies and indeed at all times.
In today’s world, leaders face unprecedented challenges — from public health crises and natural disasters to infrastructure failures and technological disruptions. The ‘Leadership in Crises’ programme equipped me with the critical skills needed to navigate these complexities, ensuring effective response and recovery in high-pressure situations.
Through Harvard’s case-study methodology, we examined real-world crises, including: Japan’s Triple Catastrophe (Earthquake, Tsunami, and Nuclear Crisis); Tuscaloosa’s Tornado Response (2011); Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill; and Columbia Space Shuttle Disaster.
These discussions reinforced the importance of “cross-boundary collaboration, situational awareness, and decisive leadership” in mitigating crises. The programme also highlighted the delicate balance between political leadership and emergency management — a key lesson for leaders in government.
My gratitude to Harvard Kennedy School, the faculty, and my fellow participants — a diverse cohort of global leaders — for an enriching and rewarding experience.
As we face evolving challenges, I remain committed to applying these lessons in the service of our dear country at all times.
