Serifatu Oladunni Oduguwa: Nigeria’s First Female Guitarist

 

A trailblazing musician whose legacy resonates decades after her untimely death

Serifatu Oladunni Oduguwa (1949–1978), popularly known by her stage name Queen Oladunni Decency or “Queen Mummy Juju,” was a revolutionary Nigerian singer, guitarist, and bandleader in the Jùjú music scene. Celebrated as Nigeria’s first female guitarist.

She broke barriers in a male-dominated industry, establishing herself as a powerful force in the Western Nigerian music circuit during the 1960s and 1970s.

At the tender age of 17, Oladunni founded and led her band, Her Majesty Queen Oladunni Decency and Her Unity Orchestra, asserting her presence as both a performer and a musical innovator.

Her command of the guitar was remarkable, enabling her to compete with male contemporaries like Sunny Ade and Fatai Rolling Dollar, earning her a place among the legends of the era alongside Fela Kuti, Victor Olaiya, Ebenezer Obey, I.K. Dairo, Ayinla Omowura, and Haruna Ishola.

A Voice and Guitar That Commanded Attention

Queen Oladunni Decency was not only a skilled guitarist but also a captivating vocalist. She was known for her vibrant stage presence, intricate guitar riffs, and rich, emotive singing style that resonated with audiences across Nigeria. Her music reflected the vibrancy of JuJu, blending traditional Yoruba rhythms with contemporary flair.

Her hit songs, including “Odun yi San wa Sowo” and “Pegan Pegan,” remain celebrated for their energetic performances and musical craftsmanship. Despite a career cut tragically short by her death at age 28 in 1978, her influence on Nigerian music, particularly for women musicians, is enduring.

Legacy of a Pioneer

Oladunni Decency’s pioneering spirit continues to inspire female musicians in Nigeria and beyond. By excelling in guitar mastery and band leadership at a young age, she challenged societal norms and paved the way for women in the Nigerian music industry. Her contributions helped shape the evolution of Jùjú music, proving that talent and determination could transcend gender barriers.
