– INEC will right the “wrong ” ,Oyo governor
Supporters of Senator Aishatu Ahmed Binani who is the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, trooped into some streets in Yola on Monday evening in what they termed a victory demonstration for her.
Just about the time that the Binani supporters were demonstrating their support in the streets, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State arrived at the Yola International Airport and went to the Government House on a solidarity visit to his colleague, Ahmadu Fintiri.
As part of continuing support moves for Binani after she was prematurely pronounced governor-elect earlier on Sunday, the supporters referenced Binani as truly the governor-in-waiting and asserted that she would soon be handed her Certificate of Return.
The now suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner in Adamawa State, Hudu Ari, had on Sunday morning declared that Binani had won the election midway into the collation of results of the supplementary governorship election in the state.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, which deployed Ari to Adamawa State had disowned his action, recalled him to Abuja, and has now asked him to stay off Adamawa, but Binani’s core supporters have held onto the pronouncement of Ari, insisting that Binani is the governor-elect.
Speaking during the pro-Binani demonstration Monday, Salihu Ahmed, a media aide for Binani, thanked her supporters for their roles “in the victory recorded by the APC” in the governorship election.
Salihu Ahmed said it was an irony that Fintiri who bragged about destroying the APC has turned out to be the one whose party, the PDP, “has now been buried.”
He said: “We, therefore, thank him (Fintiri) for his destruction of the PDP. We are here (at this demonstration rally) to tell you that our governor-elect, the first female governor in Nigeria, has gone to Abuja to collect her certificate of return.
“In the next coming days, we shall be going to the airport to receive her when she will be returning with her certificate of return.”
Makinde who spoke to newsmen after meeting with Fintiri, said what Hudu Ari did, declaring Binani winner of an election of which results were still being collated, was most unbefitting of a democratic process.
“People like Hudu Yunusa Ari have no place in Nigeria’s future democratic process,” Makinde said, asking Fintiri not to worry, as “INEC has enough people of confidence to do what is right.”
