Chief Francis Adebayo Daramola : Journey well, good man

Eni rere lo…

Chief Francis Adebayo Daramola — a truly good man — took his leave of this world early this morning at the remarkable age of 99.

From the warmth of his spirit and the ease with which he related with me, I was privileged to call him a friend.

He lived a full and active life to the very end — cheerfully receiving visitors, driving himself daily from his home to the Inland Club, where he mingled freely with people young enough to be his children, and participating with enthusiasm in community life. He was ever jolly, ever engaging.

As a teacher and principal, he shaped generations of Ekiti sons and daughters. And in a rare and beautiful twist of fate, he was one of those teachers who reaped the rewards of his labour while still on this side of eternity.

The last time I saw him, he delighted me with stories — of how, at fuel stations, former students would recognize him, insist on filling his tank, and gladly pay for it. A group of his old students from Christ School even installed solar power in his Ado Ekiti home — a testament to a life that gave so much and was deeply appreciated.

My one regret is that I did not get to see him again. About two weeks ago, he sent for me through Mr. Toyin Oluwasola, but my travels within and outside Nigeria denied me that final meeting.

Still, the memories endure — rich, warm, and enduring.

Journey well, good man.
