DISSECTING MICHAEL OPEYEMI BAMIDELE, NIGERIA’S SENATE MAJORITY LEADER

If you have been following Ekiti politics or watching the 10th Senate at work, you are likely to be conversant with the name of Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, better known as MOB. He is not a loud politician, he is a deliberate one. And that difference tells you a lot about who he is and why he matters.

*So,who is Michael Opeyemi Bamidele?*

Michael Opeyemi Bamidele was born on 29 July 1963 in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State. He is a lawyer, human rights activist, and politician, currently serving as the Majority Leader of the Nigerian Senate and Senator representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District since 2019.

MOB’s path to the Senate was built on three pillars: law, activism, and public service. He studied Religious Studies at Obafemi Awolowo University, Law at the University of Benin, and later at Franklin Pierce University in the US. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1992 and the New York Bar in 1999, he was part of the legal team that defended Chief MKO Abiola during his treason trial.

Before the Senate, he served Lagos State as Commissioner for Youth, Sports & Social Development, and later Commissioner for Information & Strategy. He also led the National Association of Nigerian Students as National President from 1988-1990.

*What Virtues Does MOB Have?*

*1. Resilience*
MOB’s politics has never been smooth, and that’s part of why it resonates. On 1 January 2018, he was shot at a political rally in Ado-Ekiti while supporting Kayode Fayemi’s campaign. He spent nearly six months recovering in London, but returned to contest and win the Ekiti Central senatorial seat in 2019. That capacity to absorb a hit and keep moving is rare.

*2. Loyalty to Process Over Person*
In 2018, MOB agreed to a peace accord within Ekiti APC that prioritized party unity over his personal ambition. When the 2022 governorship ticket went to another candidate, he stayed, rebuilt, and secured his return to the Senate in 2023. In Nigerian politics, that kind of discipline is uncommon.

*3. Legal Acumen and Discipline*
His background as a lawyer shows in how he approaches governance. As Senate Majority Leader since July 2023, he coordinates legislative business in a chamber with competing interests. Colleagues describe him as measured, methodical, and able to find consensus.

*4. Commitment to Human Rights and Justice*
Long before elective office, MOB was known for human rights work. From defending political prisoners to working with Harvard Law School’s Immigration Clinic, his early career was rooted in defending the powerless.

*5. Consistency and Institutional Memory*
Active in public service since the early 2000s, he has moved from state commissioner roles to the House of Representatives, and now Senate leadership. For Ekiti, that means someone who can translate local needs into national action.

*Key Bills and Legislative Role*

As Senate Majority Leader, MOB has been central to coordinating the passage of major legislation in the 10th Senate. He has spoken publicly on the Senate’s plan to consider the tax reform bills after resumption, and has been vocal on issues like state police, local government autonomy, and the six-year single-term bill. His legal background gives him an edge in drafting and negotiating complex legislation.

*Constituency Projects and Empowerment*

Since 2019, MOB has facilitated projects and empowerment programmes across Ekiti Central’s five LGAs. Key areas include:

*Education & Health*
– Phase 2 male and female medical students’ hostels at EKSU/EKSUTH
– FM Radio and Communication Station at EKSU and FUOYE
– Modern Diagnostic Center and CATHLAB at EKSUTH
– ICU and Amenities Center in Efon Alaaye
– 500 KVA transformer at Ijurin Ekiti Health Centre and motorized solar boreholes across Ijero LGA 11dfc943

*Infrastructure & Markets*
– Ultra-modern markets with solar street lights in Igede Ekiti, Aramoko Ekiti, and Iyin Ekiti
– Solar street lights installed across Ado Ekiti, Efon Alaaye, Ipole-Iloro, and other towns—over 300 poles in total
– Mini stadiums in Iworoko, Odo Ado, and Erinjiyan Ekiti.

*Agriculture & Youth Empowerment*
– In 2025, he launched a mega empowerment program reaching over 5,000 constituents. Items included 11 tractors, 536 sewing machines, 303 chest freezers, 180 motorcycles, 165 tricycles, and ₦100,000 grants to 1,900 small business owners
– ₦1.472 billion worth of agricultural inputs, youth/women grants, and skills training allocated to Ekiti Central in the 2023 budget.

*Education Support*
– 10,000 school bags, 1,000 mathematical sets, 1,000 calculators, and 40,000 notebooks distributed to public school students.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji, who commissioned many of these projects in March 2025, described MOB as “a gift to Ekiti State” and said the state is benefiting from having him at the federal level.

*Bottom line*

Michael Opeyemi Bamidele is defined by what he does when politics gets hard: he stays, he rebuilds, and he keeps the process moving. Resilience, loyalty to party structure, legal discipline, and a commitment to justice are the virtues that have carried him from Iyin Ekiti to the leadership of the Senate.

For Ekiti Central, those virtues translate to roads, hospitals, schools, markets, and empowerment programmes you can point to. For the Senate, they translate to a Majority Leader who can hold the line when negotiations get tough.

MOB Kajue. 👍🏽
