HND/ BSc Dichotomy Affecting Enrolment Into Higher Diploma Classes – Rector 

 

The Rector ,Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti, Engr. Temitope Alake has said that the HND/ BSc dichotomy is affecting the enrolment into the Higher Diploma Class in the Polytechnic.

Speaking at a Press Briefing commemorating  first anniversary in office as the seventh substantive Rector, Alake lamented many higher classes have become shadow of themselves in the Polytechnic as many Ordinary Dioloma certificate holders now preferred to seek admission into the university .
Alake said the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN),as a professional  was not helping matter on the age long discrimination against HND holders.
” We now have fewer students in our various higher Diploma classes .Many of our ordinary diploma prefer to go for direct entry into the University since they dont want to be seen as inferior graduates “Alake said

He therefore charged  Nigerians to embrace vocational  skills,stressing that digital economy is reducing the need for man power.

Alake said the Institution was  committed to training students to have manipulative skills in order to be  self reliant and job creators.

The Rector explained that the Polytechnic was collaborating with  the School of Agriculture  to reducing food scarcity, as the country is currently challenged by economic downturn.

He called on well-meaning Nigerians to donate tractors and support the Institution, he appealed to parents and guardians to allow their children acquire sellable skills.

Alake also  hinted  that the Institution has migrated from 11-33KV resulting to 15-hour power supply per day with the erection of new electricity poles in the Institution.

Alake said his administration prioritised the welfare of members of staff with no condition and also subsidised their transportation to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal.

“The digital economy is reducing the need for man power. That’s why we want to appeal to the parents to bring their wards to a technical school.

“This will enable them to acquire manipulative and vocational skills so that they will be job creators.”

Rolling out the achievements of his administration in tbe year under review,
Alake disclosed that the Polytechnic’s Venture has been revamped towards generating revenue.

According to him , the bread and poultry production are coming back to life to help boost the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the Institution.

“This Institution will embark on Mass Food Production through the efforts of School of Agriculture.This will help in making food available for our people as the country currently go through economic downturn. By the time this one is achieved, food scarcity will be gone.” He said

Engr Alake said the Institution under his watch works towards the achievement of tripartite core mandates namely: training of professionals, ensuring acquisition of skills by students and training of minds.

Other  projects executed were :   construction of New School of Environmental Building,  construction of Mass Communication Complex, which will serve as the studio for the department, Construction and furnishing of 36 rooms Students’ Hostel Building, ongoing construction of a Block of 4 classrooms, sponsored by the IGR Project of the institution, among others.
