A non Governmental organisation, Foundation for Excellent Living and Development for Youths and Women (FELAD) has organised a Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Survivors’ Hangout in Ekiti .
The event was organized in conjunction with the Service , Humanity, Empowerment and Leadership Development for survivors (SHELEADS PROJECT)
The programme ,according to the organisers is aimed at empowering survivors and increase advocacy for the eradication of FGM.
The event provided a safe space for survivors to share experiences, gain insights, and foster community support.
The Executive Director, Ms. Olajumoke Omisore in her presentation highlighted the myths and misconceptions, types ,effects and implications of FGM and calls for eradication of this harmful practice.
“FGM is a violation of human rights and over 200 million women and girls have been mutilated globally. It’s to accelerate the force to put this to an end” .
Survivors shared personal accounts of the physical, emotional, and social impacts of FGM, highlighting challenges such as early marriage, trauma, and sexual dissatisfaction.

The hangout facilitated a supportive community, empowered survivors, and promoted awareness. However, challenges such as limited venue space, emotional triggers, and language barriers were acknowledged.
Key recommendations included providing a larger venue, involving more resource persons, translating materials into Yoruba, and adopting a trauma-informed approach. Sustainability measures such as regular evaluations, partnerships, and capacity building were proposed.
Strategies for sustainability included regular evaluations, partnerships with local organizations, follow-up support, community engagement, capacity building, and annual empowerment workshops.
