As the world grows increasingly aware of the need for gender equality and diversity, it is heartening to see progress made in this direction. One such stride has been taken by the Ekiti State Government under the leadership of Governor Biodun Oyebanji. The governor’s executive cabinet now includes 22.8% women: 19.04% for Commissioners, 28.5% for Special Advisers; a significant and commendable increase from the past.
While this may seem like a small increment to some, it is a substantial leap towards the 35% affirmative action for women. The 35% affirmative action is more than just a quota; it is a goal—a beacon that guides global efforts towards ensuring that women have equal opportunities in all spheres of life, particularly in positions of decision-making.
Governor Oyebanji’s effort to increase female representation in his cabinet is a bold move that sets an example for other states and the nation at large. This action is not just about achieving a percentage; it’s about recognizing the valuable contributions that women can make to governance and decision-making. Women bring unique perspectives and ideas that can be instrumental in policy-making and implementation.
The inclusion of more women in the executive cabinet is crucial in bringing about a balanced and comprehensive approach to governance. It ensures that the interests, concerns, and needs of all citizens—both men and women—are adequately represented and addressed.
However, it’s important to note that this 22.8% is not the end goal but rather a milestone on the journey to gender parity. While I applaud Governor Oyebanji for his efforts, I also urge him to continue pushing for more female representation in his cabinet until the 35% affirmative action is achieved and perhaps even surpassed.
Governor Oyebanji’s efforts should serve as a wake-up call to other leaders at the state and national levels. They must recognize that achieving gender parity is not just about meeting quotas—it’s about harnessing the power, potential, and unique insights of the entire population for the betterment of the nation.
I strongly believe that the increase in women’s inclusion in the Ekiti State Government is indeed a laudable action. It is a step in the right direction, a beacon of progress, and a testament to what is possible when leaders prioritize inclusivity and diversity. However, the journey doesn’t end here. Let this be the catalyst that spurs all of us—leaders and citizens alike—to strive for gender parity in all areas of our society.
