Writer E. Jean Carroll has received more than $5.62 million from U.S. President Donald Trump following a federal civil judgment that found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation. The payment, which includes accrued interest, was released after years of legal appeals.
The money had been held in a court-supervised account while Trump challenged the 2023 jury verdict. However, the U.S. The Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal, allowing a federal judge to authorize the release of the funds to Carroll.
Carroll first accused Trump in 2019 of sexually assaulting her in a New York department store dressing room in the mid-1990s. In 2023, a federal jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and for defaming Carroll after he publicly denied her allegations. The jury awarded her $5 million in damages, with interest increasing the total payment to about $5.62 million.
Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, confirmed that the funds had been received, describing the payment as the fulfillment of the jury’s verdict after years of legal proceedings. Carroll has indicated that she intends to place the money in an interest-bearing account while other legal matters continue.
Trump has consistently denied Carroll’s allegations and described the case as politically motivated. Although this judgment has now been paid, he is still appealing a separate judgment ordering him to pay Carroll more than $83 million in another defamation case stemming from additional statements he made about her.
