WEE POLICY : Toun Okewale Sonaiya Pushes for Affirmative Procurement in Lagos

The launch of the Lagos State Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy Road map has sparked a rallying cry for women to seize the opportunities presented by the initiative.
Toun Okewale Sonaiya, CEO of Women Radio WFM 91.7, emphasized that supporting women in business requires more than just policy statements – it demands affirmative implementation.
Okewale Sonaiya urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to utilise his executive powers to ensure women-owned businesses benefit directly from procurement processes. “Supporting women in business goes beyond training and access,” she said. “
It must also reflect affirmative procurement.”  Okewale Sonaiya commended the Lagos State government for its inclusive initiatives but stressed the importance of compliance and proper documentation. “Women must do the needful,” she said. “Register your businesses, comply with tax regulations and keep documentation in order.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu whilst addressing the audience responded to Okewale Sonaiya’s request, assuring that the Lagos State procurement policy will prioritise contracts for women-owned businesses.
This promise marks a significant step towards turning policy into action.
The WEE Policy Road map is built on five strategic pillars: Agriculture, Entrepreneurship, Traditional Labour Market, Emerging Industries, and Education & Skills.
The policy aims to close gender gaps and promote inclusive growth, with cross-cutting enablers such as financial inclusion and gender-responsive governance.
With the policy road map in motion, the focus now shifts to implementation. Women across Lagos state are encouraged to step up, comply, and lead. The promise of the WEE Policy is clear: a new era of economic empowerment for women in Lagos State.
