Ekiti State Chairperson of the State AIDS Control Agency, SACA and wife of the Governor, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji has urged all Nigerians to join hands in creating an inclusive and supportive environment for those affected by HIV/AIDS, emphasizing the importance of unity in the fight against this global health challenge.
Speaking during the celebration of 2023 World AIDS Day, themed ‘Communities: Leadership to End AIDS by 2030″ in Ado-Ekiti, Mrs Oyebanji advocated for increased Testing and Awareness calling that the government should continuously scale up HIV testing and counseling services to reach more communities, emphasising the importance of early detection and treatment.
Represented by her Senior Special Assistant on Political Matters, Mrs Toyin Adepoju called on all stakeholders to “stand resolute in their commitment to achieving the UNAIDS targets while ensuring a future free from the burden of HIV/AIDS for all citizens with targeted inclusiveness and to ensure that all individuals and families are covered wherever their locations.
She noted that World AIDS Day that is observed on December 1 each year, is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for those living with HIV, and commemorate those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses.
” Once a person knows their status, it is critical to provide comprehensive care and support, this includes immediate access to Antiretroviral therapy for those living with HIV and ensuring adherence to treatment “.
She assured all that Ekiti State remains committed to the fight against HIV/AIDS saying we
” I want to assure you that out state remains committed to the fight against HIV/AIDS, we will continue to invest in prevention programmes increase to testing and treatment and support community led initiatives ” she stressed.
In his remarks, Dr Ojo Dairo, Executive Secretary, EKSACA, saluted the community leaders, healthcare professionals, researchers, activists and volunteers who have dedicated their lives to this cause saying their unwavering commitment and tireless efforts are an inspiration to us all.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Mrs Sola Gbenga-Igotun frowned against discrimination against people living with HIV. She encouraged that people should be conscious of sharing sharp objects especially in barbing and hairdressing salon.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Hospital Management Board, Dr Olasunkanmi Alabi, who described HIV ad normal ailment unlike people believing that it is a death sentence. She encouraged people to do alot of advocacies and do constant testing.
