Kola Oyewo (born March 27, 1946) is a renowned Nigerian veteran actor, dramatist, and scholar.
Early Life
He was born in Oba Ile, a town in Osun State, Nigeria, on March 27, 1946.
Education
Kola Oyewo pursued his academic career at Obafemi Awolowo University, where he earned a certificate in dramatic arts and a certificate in Yoruba oral literature. He later obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Theatre Arts from the same university in 1995. He continued his education at the University of Ibadan, where he acquired a Master of Arts (M.A.) and a Ph.D. in drama.
Career
Oyewo began his professional acting career in 1964 after joining the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. His first role was Adejare in Orogun Adedigba, the autobiography of Oyin Adejobi. After spending nine years with the group, he transitioned to the University of Ife Theatre, where he worked closely with the distinguished dramatist and scholar, Chief Ola Rotimi. Oyewo became widely recognized for his portrayal of Odewale in The Gods Are Not to Blame, a famous play by Ola Rotimi.
In 1996, he became a faculty member at Obafemi Awolowo University, where he rose to the rank of senior lecturer before retiring in 2011. Following his retirement, Oyewo joined Redeemer’s University, where he served as the head of the Department of Dramatic Art. He is currently a lecturer in Performing Arts at Elizade University in Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State.
