URGENT ENVIRONMENTAL ALERT: REPORT OF PUNGENT AIRBORNE ODOUR ACROSS ADO-EKITI AND ENVIRONS

I wish to draw the urgent attention of residents, relevant authorities, and the general public to a developing environmental concern currently being experienced across Ado-Ekiti and surrounding communities in Ekiti State.

Over the past hours, multiple residents have reported perceiving a strong, pungent odour in the air, widely described as similar to Ammonia. The odour is described as sharp, irritating, and noticeable both indoors and outdoors, with varying intensity across locations.

Some residents have also reported associated discomforts, including eye irritation, throat irritation, coughing, and in certain cases, mild breathing difficulty.

SCIENTIFIC CLARIFICATION (FOR PUBLIC REASSURANCE)

In light of growing public concern, it is important to provide accurate scientific context to prevent misinformation and unnecessary panic:

Ammonia is not an explosive substance. It is a common industrial and environmental gas and does not function as a detonation agent.

No direct link to explosive activity from odour alone. The presence of an ammonia-like smell in open air does not indicate explosive manufacturing or hazardous weaponization. Such processes require controlled industrial conditions and cannot be inferred from environmental exposure.

Common environmental sources are more likely. These include fertilizer handling, agricultural activities, waste or sewage decomposition, or possible industrial leakage.

Health caution remains important. Although not explosive-related, exposure to elevated levels of ammonia can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory system, and should be treated as a public health concern.

CALL FOR URGENT ACTION
In view of the potential environmental and health implications, immediate attention is respectfully called from relevant regulatory authorities, including
National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA)
Ekiti State Ministry of Environment

We request urgent actions as follows:

Immediate air quality testing and environmental monitoring

Identification and containment of the source of the emission

Timely public health advisory to residents

Activation of emergency response measures where necessary

ADVISORY TO RESIDENTS
Residents are advised to:

Limit unnecessary outdoor exposure where the odour is strong

Keep windows and doors closed where possible

Seek medical attention if experiencing significant symptoms

Share verified information responsibly to avoid panic
CONCLUSION
This situation is being treated as a potential environmental air quality issue requiring urgent investigation.
There is currently no evidence to suggest any explosive or security-related threat. The public is encouraged to remain calm while relevant authorities carry out necessary assessments and provide updates.
