JUNE 12 : SHOCK ABSORBER TO NIGERIAN NASCENT DEMOCRACY- Ex Oyo ALGON Boss
The chieftain of All Progressives Congress and former chairman of ALGON, Alhaji Yekeen Popoola has said that succesess recorded in the democratic process in Nigeria could be ascribed to the sacrifices made by the acclaimed winner of the nation’s freest and fairest Presidential poll ,the June 12 ,1993 ,late Moshood Kassimawo Abiola .
The former chairman of Irepo Local Government saluted Nigerians for the sacrifice, resolute, perseverance and endurance to ensure that the present democracy is continuously sustained in spite of the nation’s complexities.
Popoola,in his goodwill message to Nigerians described the June 12 as the main shock absorber that keeps sustaining this democracy to the present time.
He said “June 12 remains the only reason why Nigerians enjoy democracy till today, the election of that time which was widely adjudged as most free and fair election in the history of the country but was annulled for no tangible reason was the main factor that makes Nigerians to be resolute to continue to defend this system of government irrespective of the circumstances that surround its building and sustenance.”
According to him ,^ if Nigerians did not witness the experience of June 12, it is very possible that, succession from one government to another may not have been always peaceful like this because the events of that time quickly come to mind of every patriotic Nigerians, once an element or signal is suspected to have propensity to derail this present democracy, so June 12 will forever be a day that we can not forget in our attempt to write about democracy in Nigeria.
“I want praise Nigerians for what they have been passed through in the name of maintaining this democracy, I commend their sacrifice, resolution and perseverance because they allow the experience of June 12 to shape their thinking and reasoning which have been the major factor that has been been sustaining this democracy”.He added .
